Stock Shot Project

The supermoon of last Saturday was not visible in New York due to the overcast weather, but the moon was still very large and bright the day before and after. Because it was 14% larger and 30% brighter than normal it was a good opportunity to pick up some high resolution still images of it.  This photo was taken with a Nikon D800 in DX mode and the equivalent of a 1200mm lens (400mm lens with 2x telextender and 1.5x DX multiplier effect).  The extra 30% brightness allowed for a higher than normal shutter speed.  The moon is constantly moving and when you add in the motion multiplier of the long telephoto, you want to have the highest shutter speed you can manage while keeping the ISO at a reasonable rate.
